US Social Security
Our own
site (www.centa.com <http://www.centa.com> ) gets about 500 a day by itself and
I cannot handle the inquiries now. The email questions you have been receiving
are answers to questions coming from all over the world.
We specialize
in people "out of the country". therefore, we are more interested in a Yankee
from Pocatello, Idaho who is working in Saudi Arabia or A Canadian from
Winnipeg in Indonesia than we are in a local resident and their $100.00 return.
Although in the Yellow pages, we see little business from that source. 2 out
of 4 new clients comes from more than 100 miles away, 1 out of 4 from "off the
North American Continent".
Only 1 out of
ten comes from North or West Vancouver and another 1 out of ten from the lower
mainland. And that is after 37 years in the tax business and 31 years on the
North Shore.

Hi David,
Somehow, probably from one of your email lists, I am getting msgs like the
attachment below.
Could you pls remove me from your list? Thanks.
I welcome you to contact me. We originally met in your parking lot, last Nov.
We could have a conversation about getting your Tax Service business on North
and/or WestVancouver.com.
Very inexpensive and currently enjoying 20,000 views per day.
Thanks again David.

Subject: [CEN-TAPEDE] TN visa holder U.S. tax - do I have to pay US
Social Security
Dear Sirs,
I am a Canadian working in New York on a TN visa, I know I am a resident
alien as per U.S. tax law for the year 2002, but I wonder whether I am
subject to U.S. social security tax. Thank you very much for your help.
Best Regards
Y XXXXXXXXXXXX

David Ingram replies
If you are a resident alien, you are subject to
all US taxes including Medicare and Social Security.
However, if you were there as a temporary (less than 5 years)worker after being
transferred from a Canadian branch to a US branch, the COMPANY (not you) can
write to the Social Security Administration and exempt you from US Social
Security for up to five years. In this case, the company will pay the CPP to
Canada and you will get a T-4 Slip with just CPP on it.
Companies usually transfer their people with an L-1 visa. It would be unusual
for a TN visa holder to qualify but not impossible. You do have to be working
for the same company though and the COMPANY has to apply
for the exemption.
